Our song ‘Morning Drops’ has been used in a new advertising campaign. I always thought it would be good for something like this. Morning Drops actually morphed out of a song called The Quiet Ambient from Echo Other. It was co-written with Leona Prue and appeared on our Fall album.

First appearing in November 1999 – just before Y2K – The Inevitable was perhaps the first Australian album to match DJ Shadow, Bonobo and Thievery Corporation’s pioneering downtempo works, its elegant post-trip-hop stylings subsequently setting the tone for latter-day All India Radio releases. It also got an approving nod from the late, great John Peel, boosting AIR’s fledgling reputation as premier filmic groovemakers. Principal leader Martin Kennedy wasn’t entirely happy with the original mix, though, and ended up thoroughly retooling the LP 12 years later. Re-released on limited-edition vinyl, the updated full-length sounds like an absolute dream. Kennedy does an admirable job on updating the sonics, removing the tackier drum sounds, re-arranging the samples and adding additional guitars and bass where needed. It’s also worth noting how well The Inevitable’s tracks themselves have aged; one can establish a link to last year’s understated The Silent Surf. The opening Madras (also the first part of the album’s impromptu “Indian trilogy”) contains all of AIR’s signature elements: sparse, echo/tremolo-drenched guitar; space-y keyboards; unhurried drum shuffle. Likewise, Losing Houston is the project’s first cut to reveal Kennedy’s space/sci-fi fascination and Bollywood Knights sounds like David Gilmour suddenly getting into early Hooverphonic, while the melodramatic Bombay Mafia is worthy of a mob clan saga. Perhaps The Inevitable’s quintessential number, the twanging Holy Cowboys could have been a great Church B-side (hello, eventual Kilbey/Kennedy creative union). A fantastic 180g gift for AIR fans and casual audiophiles alike.
